Should You Hire an Illustrator?
Illustrators usually have a broad range of experience in creating illustrations for many purposes. From website elements, book illustrations, both interior illustrations and cover illustrations, comic books, maps, and illustrations for explainer videos.
Often times, self-published authors books will need illustrations to complement their manuscript. Some genres like children’s books will definitely need illustrations while other genres need minimal illustrations for the interior such as a map of the fantasy world in the book.
If you are working with a publishing company most advise against including illustrations when sending in your manuscript. Usually the editor and/or art director already have illustrators in mind for projects.
When hiring an illustrator the artwork goes through a process that takes time. Hand-drawing the artwork and then converting to a digital file is one method and another is drawing the artwork digitally and adding color, it depends on the illustrators preferred method and the type of illustration requested.
If you are self-publishing and need illustrations it is best to do some research and find a style that you like. Then check out as many illustrator digital portfolios to find artwork that you like.
Coming up with a budget before deciding on an illustrator is the best idea. There are many illustrators available at all price points. You will want to find out what the illustrators experience is especially in your particular genre.
Another thing to think about is how many illustrations you want and if it will be possible to have that many with your budget. Will you need an illustration for you cover?
Time is another factor to consider with custom illustrations. Since each illustration is hand drawn it could take several months to complete your project. Depending on the number and detail of the illustrations.

There are many sizes of interior images. For example, a children’s book can be a spot image, half page image, full page image, or two page spread.
With children’s books, you want to make sure that your illustrator pays attention to detail and keeps things consistent. Just like in the movies, people pick up on inconsistencies and they can’t focus on anything else after seeing your character in two different color shirts on the same day. Or the gas tank is on different sides of the same car.

It depends! Ugh, I know. I don’t like that answer either. We can give you a rough number between $75 – $12,000. It would not be fair to either of us if we quoted the same price across the board for every illustration we create.
Why? Because we need to know your scope, your vision, and your level of detail in your vision for your project.
You tell us that you want a 32 page children’s book illustrated. We quote you a price per page that each illustration will take around 5 hours. We give you the final image and you are disappointed because you expected it to look like a book that very detailed drawings on every page. We quoted you 5 hours and you expected an very detailed illustration that really takes 20 hours.
We do custom work. We want to meet your expectations. That is why we talk to you. We get to know your scope, your expectations and your budget. Through this partnership and communication we can deliver something that makes us all happy.
Yes, we will be realistic and honest with and refer you to some great pre-made artwork or cover templates if that works better for your budget.
